Long ago, when I still ran, I recall running in my parents' NW GA subdivision during the hotter part of the year (11 months of out of 12) carrying a water bottle. A neighbor's little terrier would always launch itself at my ankles as I trundled by, and I remember leaning down and giving it a nice, full facial squirt, which certainly nonplussed it. Even today, I use a spray bottle of water when my 2 dogs become too obstreperous and screaming doesn't work.
