Many of you know I'm the volunteer team mechanic for El Cerrito High School
Mountain Bike Racing Team. I have a son at ECHS, but he's a swimmer. I
volunteered for the team almost entirely for me. So far, it's one of the
better things I've done for myself. We race in the Norcal High School
Cycling League, in the Southern Division. We are one of six D1 teams, and
by far the smallest. D1 is dominated by Salinas High School, who regularly
field ~40 riders, while we field ~15.

Last weekend was our second race of the season and our team's best
performance ever. The race course was adjacent to Laguna Seca Raceway in
Monterrey, CA. Our EC Gauchos won three races (JV Boys, JV Girls, and Soph
Boys) and we got two second place medals and a fourth. We placed second in
the team competition behind Salinas, but beat both of our East Bay Rivals
Berkeley and Albany. We also hold a strong second place in the season-long
team overall competition. It's a big challenge for our small team because
you use your top 8 finishers to make your team score. When you only field
15 riders, going 8 deep is tough.

My weekend had several highlights. I solo-camped out at Laguna Seca Friday
night, and the evening was so warm and dry that I didn't even have to use
my rainfly. I enjoyed a very pleasant coffee outside on Saturday morning.
Being on site gave me plenty of time to do a lap on the very challenging
race course. Grant would possibly approve that I underbiked with no
shocks, but would undoubtedly disapprove at how much crabon I was running.
Besides personal stuff a couple of our kids dug incredibly deep and had
best ever results. Being around their energy has been a sort of fountain
of youth experience for me.

Sadly, during the offseason, our team trailer was stolen. So we've been
renting a U-Haul for each of these race weekends. We have an opportunity
to buy a used trailer now, but are quite short on funds. If you feel like
helping out a terrific group of kids with ANY amount, please check out our
GoFundMe below. Thanks
