Carla: Use Orange Seal. It's very expensive, but the improvement over Stan's (and Stan's is good!) is worth the premium.
Both work in tubes, at least at pressures over, say, 35 psi, and in tubeless tires at low pressures down to 15 psi, at least with thinwall and supple tires. I know how they work for thorns; little experience of other flatteners, but for thorns, they fix 95% (that's scientifically calculated with a particle beam analyzer) of the flats without stopping, the remaining 4 7/8% with "stop; pump; spin", occasionally a repeat or 2; and the remaining 1/8% you have to walk or install your emergency tube. I've not yet experienced the 1/8%.
