How small do you really need? Any DVD player will play audio CD's and some of them are pretty compact. Google says you should be able to pick one up at Target or Walmart in the $30 range. I'd rather use a player designed for domestic use than a portable, if only for the remote control.
These days I rip all of my CD's, store the files on a small laptop and stream them to the stereo via wifi.
