the great thing about black (& cream) is that they are relatively quite neutral, and give you much more freedom in selecting a color. the only thing that would look truly bad IMO is brown or yellow cloth tape, but that's more of a personal qualm & less of a design faux pas. but orange, cyan, grey, green, eggplant, or any other color would truly POP. I wouldn't use black though.. . .
