This will sound overly fussy, but if you track down some fine bronze wool there's no threat of rubbing any ferrous deposits into your lovely aluminium stem. Not sure if it really happens to aluminum, but bronze will "rust" if rubbed with steel wool. Anyhows, I assume the discoloration on the stem is caused by rust from the close proximity of the stem and steer tube, so yeah, this sounds overly fussy. -Kai Brooklyn NY
