I used to get hot spots using SPD style pedals (double sided and single
sided.) A few years back I switched pedals to the Shimano A530 dual
platform/spd pedals and the hot spots disappeared. While I have no
scientific evidence of any kind, I wondered if perhaps the shoe sole gets
more support from the larger pedal frame when clipped in? Maybe the load is
spread over a greater surface area? Again, no idea why it would be so but
that is what my experience has been. I Did a 200k brevet last year with
just shy of 12,000 ft of climbing and hand no issues, with my feet anyway!
