Not my experience, alas. I've had experts set up tubeless ready tires on tubeless unready rims with lotsa tape, and while it worked after a fashion, it was chancy whether the beads would stay tight against the rim when air pressure was released; IOW, the setup required air pressure to secure the beads firmly. Real tubeless setups (eg, F Freds and Velocity Blunt SS's) don't require air pressure to keep the beads in place.
Why not rely on air pressure, you ask? Well me, I fear finding, 20 miles from home, after a tire deflates, that I have no way of getting bead and rim back together again. Still, if the truth of the assertion cannot be held to be universally true, your setup might work, and I'd be interested to hear if it does.
