Marketing is amazing. It is used to squeeze as much money as possible from
my wallet, using as many psychological tricks as they can. In my humble
opinion, MIPS is marketing bullshirt'. From the brief research I have done
and the scalp injuries I have seen as a Paramedic, I have come to see MIPs
as snake oil. The 'slippage' or movement that the helmets market, is very
small, usually just a few millimeters.

Try this: Take all ten fingers and grab your scalp with your finger tips.
Without letting your fingers slip on your skin, move your scalp around. I
can move mine at least a couple of centimeters, in all directions. Your
scalp is a MIPS. It even uses lube (blood and interstitial fluid). The
helmet will slide a little on the surface of your scalp too, especially if
you have hair. Now that I have dumped on MIPS, I have to say that I am glad
the helmet manufacturers are finally making attempts to make helmets safer,
instead of just new colors and over stylized designs every year. Purely on
a safety basis, I think the hardshell skater type helmets are a better
solution, as they don't stick but slide. No protruding vent edges, wings,
etc. to get stuck on whatever you hit. I have yet to find one that checks
all my boxes however, as most are a little heavy, and hot. Currently I am
using a Giro Aspect and a Giro Reverb for road and town riding. They have a
roundish shape with no protruding "streamlining wings". Giro helmets fit my
head shape well.

I tried on my sons Troy Lee Designs A1 helmet and was in love with the
comfort and quality.

If I bought a new helmet, would I buy MIPS? Maybe. The prices on some
helmets are getting ridiculous. How can a bicycle helmet cost almost three
hundred dollars?
