Jagger and Richards nailed the mindset a while back when they wrote -
and sang:

"When I'm watching my T.V., and that man comes on to tell me, How
white my shirts can be, but he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke,
the same cigarettes as me"

Too many people invest too much of their identity in what they own.
Face with someone making different choices, they feel threatened. It
is a shame, but human nature. Best just to smile pleasantly and get
on with what you are doing.
