Because of my bludgeoned brain, I'm a bit of a canary in the coal mine in being ultra sensitive to real influences that cost us all in ways we may not realize (and ofter are a non-issue because a more functioning brain can filter out things mine can't). I absolutely notice a difference between supple wall tires without protection and beefier tires. I lose significantly more brain energy to the noticeably more jarring rides of the Clement MSO's (Quickbeam) and Smart Sams (Hunqapillar) vs the far more supple and smooth ride (on the same jouncy trail the same day, same conditions) with the Compass Barlow Pass (Quickbeam) and the Thunderburts (Hunqapillar). That's when I realized the benefit of supple tires was well worth it for me.
Is that ride delta significant enough to justify the cost delta? That depends on your calibration to jarring and the costs you pay for it.
