Probably down to differences in rim width and how close to the rim people run their brake pads. On a sidepull caliper, how far the pads are apart when the QR is opened is limited by how far they are apart when it is closed. If you have narrow rims and like to run your pads close to the rim for quicker brake response, I could see that your brake would open significantly less than someone who ran wider rims and didn't mind a bit more lever travel before their brakes engaged.
