Thanks everyone. Yes, I will start to ride in the lane, particularly when there are no cars around. At the very least, this action would have made the pack give me some space.
It is strange that I have had a near miss with a truck and one with a car. Neither seemed to stir up emotions as much as this incident. Thanks again for your thoughtful responses.
