Sean, it appears you have had one of those learning experiences that we all 
go through with bike wrenching.  I myself have become ever more adept at 
finding new ways to do it wrong.  That said, one guideline and one point of 
experience.  If you intend to keep the bike (car or any other machine) for 
the indefinite future always replace a failed part with one of higher 
quality.  I have both  Cane Creek & Chris King HSs, and they are both very 
good.  A good HS, properly installed should last a very, very long time. 
 Every once in awhile I test mine by locking the brake and rocking the 
fork, but they rarely need any attention.
