What do you who have used hub gears suggest? For the '03 Curt, my errand bike, with a 70" fixed cruising gear: a 1956 FM hub, with gears of .8654, 1.0, 1.1555. This hub has a freewheel.
I think that gearing the direct drive middle gear to 59" (48X20, 24.75" wheel), with a 69" top and a 51" low is best for this hub. Opinions? For the '99 Joe gofast, with a 76" fixed cruising gear, I recently found a second-edition 32 hole S3X: direct, .75, .625. I think that rather than overgearing it, I'll use top/direct as a cruising gear, again 46X15 for 76", and have 57" and a 48 in climbing gears. One could use an "overdrive" gear on a fixed gear hub for downhills, but I think I'd prefer to save direct/high for cruising. The '03 is used for around town. The '99 would be used for longer rides.
