The XD has more flare/heel clearance. The arm's are angled outward away from the spindle hole, and thus can be used with a shorter BB spindle. They are also a bit thicker in profile since they are not forged in the same was as the AT's were. The AT is "low profile," which means the arms are straight from the spindle hole to the pedal hole--no flare for heel clearance. Thus it's spindle has to be long enough to get them out past the point where they'll clear the chainstays. This worked better when they were new and rear hub spacing was 120-126mm, I think. Trying to fit the to my 135mm OLD frame was a challenge. Turns out my pedaling style appreciates more heel clearance and a Q-factor above 160mm anyway, so going with the XD's was not a hardship. But the AT's are sure pretty--very narrow in profile and beautifully polished.

My Atlantis came with XD triple cranks and a cartridge 115 bb. The chainline looked like the bb was too long but everything worked. When the original died, I replaced it with a 110. Chainline is perfect. The granny clears but not by much, so I have a note to self to use 113 next time. So what is about ATs that's so different from XDs? Side note on your seasonal desire for go-fast vs touring: Pop a set if light wheels with racy tires on your Atlantis. It completely changes the character of the bike. Looks funny as hell but it's a different bike. dougP On Dec 9, 9:43 pm, rcnute <rcn...@hotmail.com> wrote: > Lucked into a 56 Atlantis.
