Garth, I think his point was that, his perspective was one they had not 
considered.  I think he is "just riding",  but I have encountered this mindset 
of the bicycle not as a vehicle for transportation,  but a workout machine or 
recreational equipment. While it can be those things,  fundamentally it's a 
simple conveyance. 
I get a little perturbed with the local city cycling infrastructure people,  
because on their web page the promote a system if recreational bike paths! 
Seriously!? Now, while I suspect they have deeper motives and that's the face 
they present to the non-cycling public,  it still rubs me the wrong way. To me 
any cycle path or veloway is a bloody waste of time & money if it does not 
usefully take you from point A to point B! I can ride my bike around the 
neighborhood for recreation!
