Hi Ted, GREAT question! Short answer: either of those tires would be fine.
Don't over think it! I've been all over the course with 32mm Eroicas, 40mm
MSOs, Nan40, Thunder Burts, 2.25 Nobby Nics... you get the idea. Each one
is a compromise, as the route is approximately 50/50 dirt/asphalt. Then the
dirt is divided by sandy, hard pack, level, steep, smooth, rutted... you
get the idea! Go with what suits your style best. If you like having more
traction for dirt, run a heavier lugged tire like the Knard. Happy
slip-sliding a bit in order to gain efficiency on the road, go with
something slick like a Hetre.
