I've had this experience with Albas mounted to close. It sounds 
counterintuitive that you would have sore hands from an upright bar, but in 
reality we're not riding completely upright. We're still leaning in somewhat, 
and I found my hands trying to figuratively push the bar further away with a 
too-short stem: The hands are getting sore from trying to "push through" the 
bar. You'll need a significantly longer stem than you had with drops to solve 
this issue.
