I have 38mm XL Barlow Pass tires on my Ritchey Breakaway Ti Cross and really like them. I rode up this big gravely fire road behind my house yesterday and made it easily with these tires. I should take a picture so you can see what they can handle. They get a bit sketchy going downhill on the steep slick sandstone/hard pack clay. The Compass tires have also been difficult to seat on my Ritchey Zeda II tubeless ready wheels. But they perform nice once mounted. So I do like Compass tires. I know for sure I don't like tan sidewalls. Go for the extra light with Compass and they are certainly more durable than I expected. Now on the the Schwalbe Kojaks. They feel almost the same just a little more stable. But I compared the Kojaks to the Stampede Pass on my Rivendell Rodeo. I just think Rivendells ride really well with Schwalbe tires. Another example of this was my wife's 55cm Rivendell Cheviot. I originally had 650b Grand Bois Hectres and the bike rode a little weird. I remember riding my sister-in-law's Betty Foy with Schwalbe Marathon Greenguards and it rode really nice. So I switched my wife's Cheviot to the Marathon Greenguards and it rode great like a Rivendell should. One last example about Rivendells working better with certain parts (but not tire related)- I once built my 56cm Sam Hillborne with a Shimano 105 groupset and it rode OK. It didn't have low enough gearing for all the hills around my house so I switched to a more typical Riv build. I went 9 speed Sugino triple, Dura-Ace bar-end shifters XT FD & RD, Connex SS 9X chain, XT 12/34 cassette and it just works awesome the way it should. Yes, I've bought & sold & fiddled with too many bikes in my lifetime but I did get a chance to ride and test them all so I think I have a good reference point. Give them a try. If I wanted just one tire to get the job done for commuting, touring, all around use and fairly light, it would be the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 40mm.
