I have had exactly 4 encounters with motorists who believe cyclists didn't belong on their road. The only one I took to task invited me, and began by terrorizing my teenage daughter. I have also seen many more cyclists who "give us a bad name" by blasting through major intersections when they should be plugging into the traffic signal.
