Not to play devils advocate, but simply to say that simply calling the peiple rude or stupid or assholes or whatever may be accurate, but it our opinions are xolored by our experiences, those drivers that are nit bike riders truely don't understand qhat we are doing there, they think we are crazy or whatever. Thing is, both views are right. Part of the problem is that even though bicycles are generally legal on most roads and you have the right to be there, it's more than likely that the road was not designed with bicycles in mind (obviously right?) So, one can kind of understand their frustration; I do my best to stear clear of areas like this, but truth is you can't always and since you can't you will have to make the best of the situation, I fear there is no real solution short of rebuilding the roads to accommodate both and no doubt that is not going to happen. One final thought in this; sometimes we cyclists are our own worst enemies. There is a traffic signal that I sit at several times a week it is a route that is also popular with cyclists. On the other side on this intersection a bike path starts, its 8+ feet wide & never busy, yet I can't count the number of times I have been behind a cyclist who when the light changes continues on using the street rather then the bike path! As a cyclist myself I am confounded by this, because if I have a choice I will use the bike path every time & I can only imagine how a driver who does not cycle would feel!? Personally, if my local government puts in cycling infrastructure I make a point to use it, this helps me, but also soothes the nerves of motorists.
