Deacon, thanks for the tips.
I spent this afternoon installing the studded tires while the blizzard raged.  
First I pinched the tube installing the front tire.  After retrieving the spare 
from my saddlesack, I installed the tire again. Upon inflating the tire, I 
heard a hiss of air!  Turns out the spare had a hole.  It was then as I 
searched my workshop for more 26" tubes that I remembered the mental note from 
this fall to buy more tubes! :).  After patching both tubes, the front wheel 
was completed.  Swapping the back tire was less eventful as I was most careful..
I was happy to discover my spare tube problems inside my warm house!
Assuming the tubes hold air, I will explore some snow covered streets tomorrow.
