A recent thread here on converting or mixing 10 and 11 speed systems surprised me with the discovery of the number of participants who have knowledge of these systems. I have to admit I have never considered a 10 speed setup and know almost nothing about them, let alone 11 speed & electronic systems, although I have heard that the electronic systems are now very reliable. I have recently been considering going from my current Ram set up, (44/30 and 11-28, 9spd) back to a triple back (46/36/24 and 12-27) in order to get both a lower gear for long climbs and closer gear spacing. I miss the 14 cog on my 11-28 cassette. However I haven't found a crank that I really like and can afford. (Different topic that.)
That brings me to the question of whether I could at least get a lower gear, say a 32, without the even wider spacing I don't like, by going to a 10 speed. However when I look at 10 speed cassettes I don't see any that fill the bill. Mostly they offer smaller jumps between cogs and I wonder how hard it is to friction shift a 10 speed. I'm assuming an 11 speed would be quite challenging. What cassettes are people using that offer a wide range without too wide gear jumps. I am a very adept friction shifter but have found a few things are necessary to make it work consistently well. One, good equipment in good condition. Two, a rear derailler with a reasonably short cage. The Shimano RD 6700 SS on the Ram works very well; and older Ultegra racing triple derailler is reasonably good, an older Centaur mid length works OK. The long cage XTR which I originally had on the tandem was awful. So... if you are having success friction shifting 10 speed I would like to know what derailler you are using.
