I tried Smart Sams with Woody's flat fenders and the amount of detritus chunked into the fender was a constant bother and noise. I didn't experience it as a safety hazard, so for me it boils down to personal preference. And without full wrap around fenders and full length in the rear, the mud and slop got all over me anyway at speed, so I put up with a lot for no practical benefit.
