Thought I’d jump in and propose a thread I’ve been thinking about since
that beautiful, burgundy Appaloosa showed up on the web specials. Like so
many others, I’ve been very curious about the Joe Appaloosa frame. I was
looking over the Riv geometry charts and the chart on the Joe. Joe’s 55
specs are so similar to the early specs of the 56 Hillborne with longer
stays and a longer top tube and fork rake. Joe appears to be a lengthened
early Sam with larger tire clearances. I have a 56 canti-Sam after they
shortened the top tube which is great on the road. I just start to wonder
if the Appaloosa would be better in the dirt or when camping (particularly
in the dirt!). Of course, I’d prefer just the frame so I could swap all
the parts which I’ve grown quite fond of on the Hillborne.

Any speculation as to how the Joe ride would compare to Sam? To any other
Riv models? I’ve seen people posting reports such as, "like the hillborne
but with more clearances" and "cross between Atlantis and Hunqapillar” and
"cross between Atlantis and Hillborne”. Now that the Appaloosa is
officially in presale, I would love to hear what people are thinking about
its place in the Riv line up.
