I doubt you can get enough weight off the tread to make much difference in performance. Unless you only plan to use the tires for a short time, it seems like you're throwing away a lot of useful life.

I've no personal experience with tire shaving and am not a fan. However, I read a good bit of what has been said about shaving Grand Bois Hetres by Peter Weigle and riders who have used his shaved Hetres. I've also seen and handled those tires. They're substantially lighter and feel much more supple than the standard Hetre, and ride very well by all accounts -- as well, perhaps, as Hetres and Compass tires with EL casings. Much of the tread removed from a Weigle-shaved Hetre is from the sides of the tread, an area that doesn't get much wear in normal riding; in fact, when Jan designed the Compass tire line he intentionally provided less tread in that area. But, some useful tread is removed, and as you say, tire life is reduced.

It's best, I think, to consider the Weigle-shaved Hetre as an experiment that paved the way for the current tire offerings.
