I doubt you can get enough weight off the tread to make much
difference in performance. Unless you only plan to use the tires for
a short time, it seems like you're throwing away a lot of useful life.
I've no personal experience with tire shaving and am not a fan. However,
I read a good bit of what has been said about shaving Grand Bois Hetres
by Peter Weigle and riders who have used his shaved Hetres. I've also
seen and handled those tires. They're substantially lighter and feel
much more supple than the standard Hetre, and ride very well by all
accounts -- as well, perhaps, as Hetres and Compass tires with EL
casings. Much of the tread removed from a Weigle-shaved Hetre is from
the sides of the tread, an area that doesn't get much wear in normal
riding; in fact, when Jan designed the Compass tire line he
intentionally provided less tread in that area. But, some useful tread
is removed, and as you say, tire life is reduced.
It's best, I think, to consider the Weigle-shaved Hetre as an experiment
that paved the way for the current tire offerings.
