This is *not* a complaint. This is a follow-up from my previous post regarding use of Willow chainrings with 10-speed drivetrains.
I finally installed my 46T and 29T chainrings that I got from David on my 10-speed bike. They replaced a 48/34 combo as I wanted lower gears. The 29T works fine with my Ultegra 10-speed chain. The 46T, despite appearing to mesh fine on the workstand, "jumped" once I was on the road and applied a bit of force on the cranks. The chain is fairly new and measured (with a 15" metal ruler) to have minimal wear. Upon inspection, the width of both 29T and 46T Willow chainrings are almost 2.3 mm, whereas the originals are closer to 2.0 mm. The 29T work fine as perhaps their teeth are taller; the 46T's teeth are shorter, although they are the same height as the teeth from the original chainring it replaced. I'm guessing the extra width of the teeth prevented the narrower links on chain from seating consistently, and increased the propensity to "jump" under load. This explanation isn't satisfying as 7 through 11-speed chains should all have an internal width of 3/32". I did find that the Surly stainless chainrings do not like 9-speed chains although they were fine with 8-speed chains. I guess I'm stuck with expensive Sugino originals.
