As far as the return home, guys, you are way over-analyzing this. Find San Francisco. Go west. See ocean. Turn left. Keep the water on your right. 4-5 easy days and you're in San Luis Obispo. Anytime after that you can pick up the train if you're short of time or otherwise want to get home quickly.
Getting there is EZ. Rent a one-way minivan (seats 4 + 4 bikes + gear easily) to drop in at SFO or OAK. I'm going to see if I can work this into my summer. There's a 90% chance we have a wedding to attend in Prague on July 4 weekend and of course that's too far to go for just a weekend. But if I get back with a week between events I'll be good to go.
