I think they've moved from fad to "basic inexpensive bike", like the Schwinn cruisers and Sting-Rays of my childhood. There's a plethora of these things at rock-bottom prices on Amazon and Ebay, plus the barely-used ones for even less on Craigslist. I'm much too old to be running around on a garishly-colored hipster-bike, but I'll probably get one anyway ;)
