Hugh:

Thanks! I have in my mind that they were 55mm fenders. I could have gotten
the tires in there with some fiddling, but I have fenders on my Atlantis and
Quickbeam, so not a big deal to run the Bomba fenderless for a while.

Tom,

As always you do excellent work!

Just curious, which fender's were you running? I've got the SKS ~60mm on my
26" wheel size Atlantis running the 2.1 TB's with ton's of clearance.

Must be something going around about East Coast Bombadils – I spent a few hours
tinkering with mine yesterday as well. Functionally, made some changes:

1. Installed Thunder Burts in place of the old Fatty Rumpkin Force Fields.
Huge difference in the ride (the Fattys are pretty clunky, if bombproof), but a
bit of a leap of faith re flats (or lack thereof) – changing a tire on the
Rohloff/Pitlock rear wheel might be a bit of a chore on the road. TBs are
about 52mm on Velocity Synergies newly installed; I assume they might stretch
out another mm or two eventually. Plenty of clearance for the TBs, but…

2. Not enough for TBs plus fenders, so the fenders had to go.

3. The old Brooks Plump Grips looked great, but the supposed length
adjustability (unscrew spoke nut, remove required number of leather rings, et
voilá – shorter grip to accommodate Rohloff twist shifter) didn’t work very
well in practice, so installed a basic pair of black “cork” grips from VO, with
the right side cut to size to fit the Rohloff shifter.

4. And I finally got around to adjusting the Rohloff shifting, so that I now
actually have all 14 gears (instead of the 13 that sufficed for the first few
hundred miles).

Planning to fiddle around with some new bag configurations tonight.

Subject: [RBW] Wrenching on the Bombadil

The other thread on the joys of wrenching made me want to share part of my
day's wrenching project. The Saluki re-build has allowed me to start messing
around with the Bombadil which maintained it's initial configuration since I
scrambled to put it together for my big Veterans Day ride last November. This
frame has so much flexibility! Honestly though I think it really just wants
fatter tires and sleak, flared handlebars! So here is what I've been working
on....

http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2015/06/nobby-bombadil.html

For those keeping track those are 2.25", 650B Nobby Nic's. Definitely on the
outside of recommended width for the first gen Bomba's but I think in un-muddy
situations it's going to be fine. I picked up these tires locally and couldn't
pass on the opportunity to check the clearances. 2.1" is definitely the sweet
spot for this frame though. The Nitto RM14 Dirt Drop bars are remarkably
comfortable to ride in the drops at least as high up as I have them. I'm
hoping to get off-road for a couple hours this week or coming weekend.
