Depending on your first day mileage, I might suggest the Capital Crescent trail out of Silver Spring all the way to Georgetown. In Georgetown, turn and get on the C&O canal at its beginning.
Or you could just switch from the CCT to the Towpath at Fletchers Boathouse, rather than going all the way down to Water St
