Anne, sounds like you have found a solution to carrying gear in the rear, but a few bag makers can produce small bikepacking seatbags. I had one made by Greg at Boulder Bags that will fit a "french fit" bike. others...I really like the way clipless pedals work and how I feel more part of the bike. It keeps my feet aligned and my pedal stroke smooth.
