I've done Longboards and Honjos.
Rear wheel fender is usually not hard.
But mounting the front fender can be pretty involved require solution seeking. 
Your LBS might have the hardware you may need to make it happen.

I don't know what all the issues you are having are, but list them here and I 
bet some of us could give you solutions.

Fenders take patience, and the realization that installation can take more than 
a fortnight if you run into hitches. It requires patience, and I mean patience 
with wild abandon. But it's worth the learning experience and satisfaction when 
you are done.

If the fork crown is too high, and the brake calipers are too low, try a 
Sheldons fender nut to hang fender off of the back of the fork crown. Just 
mount the fender tab to the nut. That'll get the fender closer to the tire. One 
cannot always mount to fork crown daruma, depending on the situation.
