A lot of it is shear blind luck. I had one 40 mm Schwalbe Marathon Supreme go over 11,000 miles on the front without a flat. It was well worn but not shot. I put a fresh set of the same tires on both wheels and within the first 1,000 miles ran over something that sliced the rear right down to the carcass. It looked worse than yours. That one hit the scrap heap as soon as I got home.
