American road cyclists were divided into /tourists/ and /racers/ back when Bicycling magazine had just graduated from being a mimeographed sheet. The bikes were different -- racers used tubulars, while tourists used clinchers; racers shaved their legs and tourists didn't; racers invariably looked to Italy while tourists looked to France and England. Tourists used bags. Tourists used low gears and even triples. Initially, racers used "helmets" (leather hairnets) while tourists did not.
