I guess the consensus on this list is that 15-17mph for a 50+ mile ride would
be considered a fast pace. Good to know as calling a ride "moderate" , "slow",
"fast" when you are trying to organized something is crucial. It's good to let
people know what to expect.

I learned this with the one person who joined me on Friday. I told him we'd do
the moderate, 16-17mph, pace and after 20 miles, he was cooked. Though to his
defense, we rode eastward from Carlsbad and quickly found ourselves in +90F
heat, which was a little much to ask for a native from Ontario on vacation. His
body was not quite acclimated. He sagged in thanks to his wife, and I continued
on for a 56mile round trip with 2500ft of climbing and right on 15.8mph average.

We went out to Bonsall and Lawrence Welk Resort (for those who know the area)
and I re-discovered the incredible ride of the Gran Bois Cerf (green label)
tires. Might have to try the Compass Extralight version. Over rough chip seal
and rutted roads, these tires simply soak it all up and help to isolate you
from the road vibrations. I have them mounted on the Pacenti SL23 rims and they
measure a hair over 30mm wide on these rims. Typical pressures are 80-85psi
front and 85-90psi rear for my 190lb body.

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Do you train to be able to keep those speeds, or are you just naturally fast?
Wait a second...is Carlsbad flat? Here in Maryland you would be considered fast
on our rolling terrain...at least considered fast by me.
