I know we're talking about cotton here, but on my more modern builds (all 
my vintage builds get cotton) I switched to Fizik Microtex.  It's amazing 
stuff. It has the feel (and look) of perforated leather without the slimy 
slippery feeling of real leather when it gets wet.  It's not spongy like 
cork tape. And it cleans with a sponge and some dilute soap. It seems to 
last forever. I like it so much I'm tempted to use it on my vintage builds.
