I like the idea of a once over with a wire brush. Gets the debris off. I keep a container of 40 wt (or higher) motor oil in the garage and use an old toothbrush to dress the chain. Works well. You do want much oil on the chain. Just enough to keep rust at bay.
Pay particular attention to the jockey wheels on the derailer. They tend to get cruddy with crud when run in snow.
