I've been using Schwalbe Mondials (40s) with good success. My commute is half
city streets, half hard pack gravel. They are similar to the SOMAs and the old
Marathon XRs. Treads are pretty deep and the spacing opens up on the edges.
Results in smoother feel on the road and good cornering in dirt. Only slipping
I experienced was on some wet dirt trails. The only change I would make to the
would be a boxier cross section so the side tread would engage sooner on
trails. That's where some cross tires may excel. I believe these were designed
more for mixed terrain touring.
