I have the same issue with a 9 speed bar end. It's been in a bucket of turpentine for a couple of weeks and it's still gummed up. Some suggested that it was something mechanical, but I have played with it incessantly and I don't think it is mechanical. So apparently it's now a throwaway item. Well, I had planned to run these 8-speed shifters on the Paul thumbies...which lets me switch between index and fiction. I'm usually in friction. But since they aren't working, I've mounted some cheapie Falcon shifters that I bought from Riv years ago. Haven't run the cables yet, but they actually feel pretty good. Still, I'd prefer to not just chuck the Shimano's in the trash...but it looks like that may be the end result.
