Brian, I didn't make the ride last year, but I have backpacked all my life
and have a lot or experience with ultralight camping. I recently got a
water-resistant bivy sack from Borah Designs. I used it on a recent
bikepacking trip and was very happy with it. I put my pad and sleeping bag
inside and it has a mesh hood to keep bugs out and a little loop ( that
hooks to a nearby bush or tree) to keep the bivy hood off your face.
The bottom is fully waterproof, but the top is a highly breathable but very
water resistant fabric that will keep a light mist or overnight dew off
your bag. It weighs only 7 oz and packs the size of a softball. That with
a small tarp if you expect heavier rain is what I would pack. It also adds
a little warmth to your sleeping bag. With a light tarp your whole shelter
is less than a pound and very compressible.

I'm probably going to have to miss the Oregon Outback this year as my
daughter is expecting a child a week before.
