I've had my Atlantis since '03 & ridden it as my primary bike. It's been on tours, off-road, mostly noodling around the town, etc. I love it & how well it handles everything I like to do. However, last summer I test rode several bikes at RBWHQ (not bike shopping, just trying different handlebars) and the one I like the best was the Sam. Were I to buy a Rivendell today for my riding, which sounds pretty much similar to yours, it would be a Sam. As Jim says, yea, the Atlantis is "nicer" but $1,000 nicer? Note when I got my Atlantis there were not as many models & I was after a stout touring frame.
