I used Tektro RX40 short reach before converting to 650B on my early custom, the Tektros allowed me to use the Grand Bois Cypres, but it was really close. Never rubbed though.
That said - I'm pretty happy with my conversion and won't be going back. 38s with fenders is head and shoulders above 700x30 with no fenders.
