What a sweet ride! I ride extra distances on mine just because. :-) As a rack and bag person myself, I would never call them somewhat unnecessary. My experience is that as soon as you take them off you realize you need them to carry something. I just leave 'em on all the time, even when I go on longer rides without stuff.
