I did a similar thing on my Surly LHT, using the low rider mounts and threaded holes on the side of their crown. Seems pretty beefy to me, although I mainly use it for a Small TrunkSack so I don't load it up with big weight. Still, in 1.5 years of lots of bumpy riding it's never given any signs of coming loose or even flexing all that much.
