I think the important thing is to find what works for you, and what you are comfortable with, and do it regardless of what anyone else may think. What may feel inefficient to me, may feel great for someone else-- because we are talking about how they feel, not whether or not they are really inefficient. I don't think riding clipless is an act of heresy-- but doing it because that's what everybody else is doing might be.
