Riv's version of these stems had the same hardware. My recollection is that the quills are friction-welded on, so Grant spec'ed them as long as he could. Looking closely at one NItto Technomic stem I have in the parts bin, I can see and feel the joint. I love the look of these stems too (I have two), but they're a little on the twisty side, especially with a wide bar like the moustache.
