Every year the folks at Cycle Wild arrange for a trip to Cape Lookout State
Park for the Labor Day Weekend. The ride needed a co-ride-leader because of
policy, and because I love legal fictions I agreed to be that co-leader. To
be honest I don't think I qualified as a ride leader so, oh well.

We left the Hillsboro MAX station in the Oregon Dizzle. It was a nice
re-introduction to wet riding after such a long hot Summer. We made good
time as we buzzed south from the suburbs towards Yamhill County and the
Oregon wine country. We took the southern crossing to Tillamook County, via
the Nestucca River Road. The ride profile resembles a classic playground
slide; Very aggressive climbing to the top and a leisurely descent over a
long distance. Once we reached US 101 we jogged north for a few miles
before leaving the highway again and riding amongst the forest and sand
dunes before a final 400' up and down before arriving at the campsite,
about 9.5 hours later.

This route has a few things going for it: Low, LOW traffic volumes, an
abundance of BLM/Forest Service campsites along the river (plus water), and
gorgeous scenery. And gravel!

This trip always feels like a family reunion to me. The hiker/biker sites
are wonderful; it really feels like a small village.

We relaxed all Sunday and dined on Ling Cod, BBQ'd oysters and mac and
cheese as the sun set. Beach fires, and singing, you know.

Pictures prove that long exposures of the night sky are
