What chutzpah. Get over it people and "Blame the Google"? Because they
are for most people a nameless, faceless large multinational corporation?
What about all those Yahoo and Hotmail accounts that also get hacked?
Who's to blame for that?

I've been a network security administrator for 15+ years and I hear this
stuff all the time. The reality is, we all share in the responsibility for
network security. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

It is incumbent upon the end user to set a password that is resistant to
attempts to cracking. And to update the software on their machines quickly
after Apple or Microsoft or whoever release security patches. Gmail also
offers two-factor authentication by using an authentication token on your
smartphone that changes every 30 seconds.

Of course, it is incumbent on people like me to keep abreast of new
technologies and new threats, and to share said information with our peers.

I'm not going to speculate at all, because I don't have any information
about the account compromise. I think blaming it all on Google is pretty
shortsighted, though. (Anyone who has access to Google's IPS logs is
welcome to give us a concrete evidence of what actually happened.)

Neither am I going to blame it on Grant, because I don't have enough
information to do so.

For most organizations, it makes sense after such an incident to review
security policies and procedures. Most companies have them, but few do
much more than pay lip service to them.

Well anyway, back to work.
